SS Republic Project Pictures - Odyssey Marine Exploration

Many of the coins observed on the SS Republic shipwreck site are in pristine condition. Some have a light film that rinses away easily on the surface, revealing gleaming gold. In November, gold Coronet Head 20 Dollar Double Eagles, Coronet Head 10 Dollar Eagles and silver Seated Liberty Half Dollars were recovered.The SS Republic was a sidewheel steamer that sank in 1865 with a large cargo of coins. Odyssey Marine Exploration discovered the shipwreck in the summer of 2003 and began the archaeological excavation in November.
