Cast from the original brass religious medallion recovered from the "Tortugas" wreck site (darkened image shown above), this 14 karat gold replica shows the lettering "Santa Cateri" that was still visible after over 350 years on the ocean floor. The main image is thought to be St. Catherine wearing a crown and carrying a sword. The reverse side features additional holy figures and the word "ROMA".
Also referred to as the "Tortugas" wreck due to the proximity to the Dry Tortuga Islands, the 1,300 feet-deep site is believed to be the Buen Jesús y Nuestra Señora del Rosario, one of the vessels sailing with the ill-fated 1622 Tierra Firme treasure fleet. The Rosario along with her sister ships the Nuestra Señora de Atocha and Santa Margarita was lost in a hurricane while passing through the Florida Strait on the return voyage to Spain.
This lovely piece is approximately 1" long and includes a 16" 14 karat yellow gold box chain.
